Private copy remuneration
Under Czech law, everyone is allowed to make personal copies of sound recordings or audiovisual works for private use. This means you can legally record part of a broadcast or an online video, copy or download a movie to your computer, etc. However, because this practice conflicts with the interests of rightsholders, there is a system of statutory compensation for making private copies.
This system requires manufacturers and importers of devices and media that can be used for making such copies to pay a compensation fee, the amount of which is set by law. Since the obligation and the fee amount are legally defined, no licensing contract is necessary.
